In The Room Where You Sleep

Music Video

May 2024

The Brief

This music video was produced in 2024 to fulfil my NCEA level 2 assessment of a ‘resolved work that demonstrates control of skills appropriate to cultural conventions’. This assessment was completed around May/April of 2024. As this was a solo project, my creative role was that of director, editor, cinematographer, and animator.

For an excellence grade, the music video had to incorporate key conventions of a music video to create an effective product that has a clear consideration of an audience, utilises evident creativity, and shows consistent mastery of production technology.

I set out to make a vintage horror-comic-inspired video to the song, ‘In The Room Where You Sleep‘ by the artist Dead Man’s Bones. I utilised key conventions of colour grading, animation, lighting, composition, titles, and sound for this video.

For my animation, I used After Effects and Photoshop. I created three puppets in total for two characters, and used ‘parenting’ techniques in After Effects to link layers together. Afterwards, I brought these After Effects files into Premiere Pro and layered them alongside my ‘real-life’ video footage. Within Premiere Pro, I animated using separate shape layers to cover up aspects of my footage which I didn’t want the audience to see, e.g. a car.
